Julia Kuo Agent(s): Emily van Beek Julia Kuo is a Taiwanese-American illustrator based out of Seattle. She has taught illustration courses at Columbia College Chicago and at her alma mater, Washington University in St. Louis. Julia was the visual arm of Chicago’s 2017 March for Science and has had the honor of being an artist-in-residence at Banff Centre for the Arts in 2014 and in 2017. She is currently the recipient of a 2019-2021 Gray Center Mellon Collaborative Fellowship at the University of Chicago. Mike Wu Agent(s): Emily van Beek Mike Wu was accepted into the Character Animation program at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, CA. He was then recruited by Walt Disney Feature Animation Studios where he worked for the next six years on such films as Hercules , Tarzan , Atlantis , and Mulan . Shortly thereafter, Mike followed his childhood dream of working for the studio that created Luxo Jr. He started at Pixar Animation Studios where he animated on the Oscar-winning The Incredibles , Ratatouille , Up , the Oscar-winning Toy Story 3 , and Brave . In addition to his animation, Mike is the author and illustrator of Ellie and its sequel, Ellie in Concert and he is the illustrator of Adele Griffin’s chapter book series, The Oodlethunks. Sydney Smith Agent(s): Emily van Beek Sydney Smith is the author-illustrator of the upcoming Do You Remember? and Small in the City and the illustrator of I Talk Like a River by Jordan Scott, Inkling by Kenneth Oppel, Smoot, A Rebellious Shadow by Michelle Cuevas, Sidewalk Flowers by JonArno Lawson, The White Cat and the Monk by Jo Ellen Bogart, and Look-Out for the Fitzgerald Trouts and Knock About with the Fitzgerald-Trouts by Esta Spalding, among others. Elly MacKay Agent(s): Emily van Beek Elly MacKay works from the attic of her old Victorian house in Owen Sound, Canada where she lives with her husband and children. She creates unique images through using layers of paper, light and photography. Elly attended the Nova Scotia College of Art for printmaking but also had an informal education in paper arts by visiting members of the Movable Book Society by train when she was a teen. She now creates picture books and illustrates covers for novels. Jessica Lanan Agent(s): Emily van Beek Jessica Lanan is the author and illustrator of Jumper: A Day in the Life of a Backyard Jumping Spider and The Fisherman and the Whale , a Colorado Book Award finalist and winner of the Bull-Bransom Award for wildlife art. She has illustrated many other books including The Lost Package by Richard Ho, Just Right: Searching for the Goldilocks Planet by Curtis Manley and Thank You Moon by Melissa Stewart. Jessica grew up surrounded by nature in the Rocky Mountains. She studied sculpture and Japanese at Scripps College and after graduation traveled solo for a year in Japan, Thailand, Laos, and India on a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship to study and illustrate folk tales. She brought a set of travel watercolors on that trip and has been a devoted travel sketcher and plein air painter ever since.
